Emergence of Open Convergence

Hyper-Converged Infrastructure has brought with it many benefits. Good. But it also either added new problems and/or exacerbated existing ones. Bad. Sometimes, very bad. But what if you separate the compute nodes from the storage nodes? Datrium says you get 18 million IOPS -- an order of magnitude higher than Dell EMC's XtremIO. Datrium has removed the constraints. That's Open Convergence.

Server CPU is leveraged for all data services including erasure coding, data reduction and encryption, An implementation currently scales to 32 compute nodes and 1500 VMs per. All reads are from local server flash and all writes go to data node NVRAM giving both host and workload isolation resulting in predictable performance

Three Distinct Reasons to Evaluate Datrium for Your SSD-Enabled VMware Environment

(1) Simpler than Hyperconverged
  • Config-free management
  • Designed for massive scale at BYO economics
  • Scale IO processing or capacity as needed
  • Turnkey without vendor lock-In
(2) Faster than all Flash Arrays
  • No controller bottlenecks
  • Storage performance scales with each server
  • Server flash is faster, cheaper v.s. array flash
  • No LUNs to manage
(3) No Separate Backup Silo
  • One UI for VM consolidation & data management
  • Protect & replicate VMs, files, containers
  • Cost-optimized data node for hot & cold data
Datrium splits speeds on servers from durable data on the network. So it’s Open to run with any server—including blades—and provides Convergence of I/O processing on the server. That’s Open Convergence. Check out their two-minute video:
"Split Provisioning enables an order of magnitude more application bandwidth than most all-flash arrays, much simpler rackscale consolidation than HCI, and better secondary storage than either. This is tomorrow calling," according to co-founder and CEO, Brian Biles.

Watch this brief video and see what others, your peers in the industry, are saying:

Datrium was founded by industry veterans from the virtualization and storage disciplines. Their past  leadership roles are from the following companies:
  • VMware
  • EMC
  • Data Domain
  • NetApp
